upGrad’s 2026 Study Abroad Report finds nearly half of Indian aspirants prioritising job opportunities, while Germany, France, Spain and Finland gain momentum
Mumbai : upGrad, one of Asia’s leading integrated skilling and lifelong learning companies, has released the latest edition of its Transnational Education (TNE) Report 2026, highlighting a significant shift in how Indian students approach international education.
Based on insights from 53,800 aspirants counselled between January 2025 and June 2026, the report identifies an emerging “Era of Strategic Pivot”, with employability, career outcomes and affordability increasingly influencing study-abroad decisions. According to the report, 49% of Indian aspirants cite better job opportunities as their primary reason for studying abroad, placing career outcomes ahead of university prestige, quality of education, permanent residency and lifestyle considerations.
Europe Gains Momentum as Students Seek Value and Career Pathways
While the USA, UK, Canada and Australia continue to remain important study destinations, changing immigration policies and rising costs are encouraging students to explore alternative markets across Europe.
Germany, France, Spain and Finland are emerging as attractive destinations due to their affordability, industry alignment and employment-linked pathways.
Germany has emerged as the leading destination among upGrad Study Abroad learners, accounting for 51% of enrolments during the study period. The company clarified that this figure represents upGrad learner data and does not indicate the overall Indian outbound student market.
Affordability Becomes a Major Decision Factor
The report also highlights the growing importance of affordability. Seven in ten aspirants plan to study abroad with a total education budget below ₹30 lakh, indicating increasing demand for cost-effective international education pathways.
The aspirant pool largely comprises students at the beginning of their professional journeys, with 65.8% being freshers. Nearly 60% come from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, while more than 73% expressed interest in pursuing master’s degrees abroad.
AI and STEM Reshape Programme Choices
Artificial Intelligence is also influencing programme selection. According to upGrad, half of its Pathways portfolio now consists of AI-integrated or AI-first programmes, while demand for STEM education has increased 18% year-on-year as students seek future-ready skills.
Women are also strengthening their participation in STEM, accounting for nearly 39% of upGrad’s STEM enrolments.
Commenting on the findings, Praneet Singh, Vice President, University Partnerships, upGrad Study Abroad, said: “The study abroad landscape is undergoing a significant shift, with Indian students increasingly prioritising career outcomes, democratized modalities and immediate ROI. Europe’s growing appeal reflects this evolving mindset, as learners seek destinations that combine quality education with strong workforce-integration opportunities.”
He added that through its hybrid pathways model, upGrad Study Abroad is helping students navigate major education and career decisions with greater flexibility and confidence. The TNE Report 2026 further examines hybrid pathways, AI-led curricula and multi-country study models, alongside country-specific policy analysis and projections for India’s study-abroad market through 2028.
