Over 85,000 cadets across 1,150+ educational institutions contribute to leadership, discipline, social responsibility and nation-building
Ahmedabad : The National Cadet Corps (NCC), one of India’s largest and most impactful youth organisations, continues to play a pivotal role in shaping disciplined, confident and responsible young citizens while contributing meaningfully to the larger objective of nation-building.
The NCC, which traces its origins to 1917 and received its present statutory form under the National Cadet Corps Act in 1948, has evolved into a nationwide voluntary and uniformed youth organisation dedicated to developing leadership, discipline and a strong sense of national responsibility among young Indians. From an initial strength of around 20,000 cadets, the organisation grew to approximately 17 lakh cadets in 2025 and is slated to expand further towards 20 lakh cadets by 2028.
Speaking on the transformative role of the NCC, Major General Bimal Monga, SM, VSM, Additional Director General, NCC Directorate, Gujarat, Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu, highlighted that NCC is much more than a training organisation—it is a movement that empowers young people with qualities that remain relevant throughout their personal and professional lives.
Five Pillars of Cadet Development
At the heart of NCC training are five core qualities—Discipline, National Integration, Camaraderie, Adventure and Leadership.
Through its diverse training ecosystem, NCC encourages cadets to follow rules, manage time and maintain high standards of conduct. It brings together young people from different states, languages and backgrounds, reinforcing the spirit of Unity in Diversity and strengthening bonds of friendship and mutual respect.
Adventure activities such as trekking, mountaineering, sailing, scuba diving and other challenging experiences help cadets develop resilience, mental toughness and the confidence to face unfamiliar situations. Leadership is cultivated through team responsibilities, problem-solving and practical decision-making experiences.
Beyond these core attributes, NCC also helps young people develop essential life and professional skills, including teamwork, resilience, decision-making, interpersonal communication and adaptability.
Training for a Changing India
NCC cadets receive exposure to a wide spectrum of training, including military proficiency, drill, physical fitness and specialised air and naval training. Residential camps provide opportunities to experience a disciplined lifestyle while strengthening teamwork, leadership and national integration.
Cadets also actively participate in civic and community development initiatives, environmental campaigns and disaster-response preparedness. They receive training in first aid and immediate basic response during natural disasters.
Keeping pace with emerging technologies, NCC is also expanding exposure to contemporary areas such as Cyber Defence, Drone Flying and Artificial Intelligence, preparing cadets for the evolving challenges of the modern world.
NCC Gujarat: A Growing Youth Powerhouse
Since being carved out of the 1 Circle Cadet Corps, Bombay, in 1960, NCC Gujarat has emerged as a major youth force, with approximately 85,000 cadets enrolled across more than 1,150 educational institutions.
The organisation today has representation across all 37 districts of Gujarat and the Union Territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu. Women cadets now constitute nearly 42 per cent of the strength, while participation has also expanded significantly in remote border and coastal regions.
The achievements of NCC Gujarat cadets have also been notable. Over the last three years, 35 cadets have been selected as Officers, more than 250 have joined the Defence Forces as Agniveers, and close to 1,000 cadets have joined the Gujarat Police during the last two recruitment cycles.
Cadets have also represented Gujarat internationally through Youth Exchange Programmes in countries including the United Kingdom, Russia, Singapore, Vietnam, Kyrgyz Republic, Mauritius and Maldives, while many others have earned recognition at national-level sporting competitions, expeditions and prestigious events such as the Republic Day Parade and Ekta Diwas celebrations.
A Force for Social and Community Development
NCC Gujarat has demonstrated its preparedness and social commitment through large-scale participation in national and community initiatives. More than 7,500 cadets demonstrated readiness during Op Sindoor, while 3,000 cadets were involved in disaster-relief preparedness under the Yuva Aapda Mitra Scheme.
Cadets have also contributed to initiatives such as Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam, the 5 Million Tree Mission, Swachhta Abhiyaan, cleaning of the Sabarmati River, the National TB Elimination Programme, blood donation camps and awareness campaigns against digital fraud and drug abuse.
In a significant forward-looking initiative, NCC Gujarat has also presented an Action Plan to the Hon’ble Chief Minister to harness the organisation’s extensive youth network, discipline and leadership capabilities towards preparations for the Commonwealth Games 2030 in Ahmedabad.
Building a Generation of Responsible Leaders
For individual cadets, the impact of NCC extends far beyond their years in uniform. The organisation seeks to create confident, disciplined and ethically grounded citizens who carry the values of leadership, camaraderie, adventure and patriotism into their future careers and communities.
