Ahmedabad/Okha : Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Meera Behn was solemnly decommissioned at Okha Port in a traditional sunset ceremony conducted with full Armed Forces honours, marking the end of more than two decades of distinguished service to the nation.
The ceremony was presided over by Deputy Inspector General Manjeet Singh Gill, Commander, Coast Guard District Headquarters No. 15, Okha, and attended by civil and military dignitaries, the commanding officer and crew of the vessel, and representatives of Coast Guard units stationed at Okha.
The ceremony commenced with an impressive Guard of Honour. At sunset, the Coast Guard Ensign was hauled down from the vessel for the final time, followed by the lowering of the Decommissioning Pennant, formally marking the end of Meera Behn’s active service.
Built by Goa Shipyard Limited, ICGS Meera Behn was commissioned on 25 July 2006 and belonged to the water-jet-propelled Extra Fast Patrol Vessel (XFPV) series, known for its high speed and operational agility.
The vessel was commanded by Commandant (JG) Thinkal Tharakan, who rendered the final decommissioning report to DIG Manjeet Singh Gill, formally concluding the ship’s active service.
Named After Meerabehn
ICGS Meera Behn derives its name from Meerabehn, a devoted disciple of Mahatma Gandhi and a prominent figure in India’s freedom movement. Deeply inspired by Gandhian ideals, she dedicated her life to selfless service to the nation.
In recognition of her devotion and commitment, Mahatma Gandhi bestowed upon her the name “Meera”, in honour of the legendary saint-poet Meerabai.
Over Two Decades of Maritime Service
During its distinguished career spanning more than two decades, ICGS Meera Behn proudly flew the National Flag and Coast Guard Ensign while contributing to the Indian Coast Guard’s mission of safeguarding India’s maritime interests.
Addressing the crew and guests at the ceremony, DIG Manjeet Singh Gill paid tribute to the ship and its personnel for their yeoman service to the nation. He commended all those who served onboard for their dedication and contribution towards protecting India’s maritime interests.
The decommissioning of ICGS Meera Behn marks the conclusion of an important chapter in the operational history of the Indian Coast Guard, while honouring the vessel and generations of personnel who served aboard her with commitment and pride.
