Bengaluru, July 2026: Fortis Hospital Bannerghatta Road has achieved a significant milestone in robotic surgery by successfully performing the world’s first reported combined robot-assisted heart bypass surgery, robotic groin hernia repair, and circumcision under a single anaesthesia on an 81-year-old patient.
The groundbreaking multidisciplinary procedure enabled the patient to avoid three separate surgeries, significantly reducing surgical trauma, anaesthesia exposure, hospital stay, infection risk, and overall recovery time.
The complex surgeries were performed by a multidisciplinary team comprising Dr. Sudarshan G T, Director – MICS & Robotic Cardiac Surgery; Dr. Saurabh Mishra, Director – GI, Minimal Access & Bariatric Surgery; and Dr. Mahendra Jain, Consultant – Urology, highlighting the hospital’s advanced robotic surgical expertise and collaborative approach to patient care.
Three Critical Conditions Addressed in One Surgery
The elderly patient from Mysore initially visited Fortis Hospital with a painful groin hernia requiring surgery. During pre-operative assessment, doctors also detected severe blockages in three major coronary arteries after he complained of chest pain and breathlessness. Further evaluation revealed phimosis, a urological condition causing painful urination and increasing the risk of recurrent urinary tract infections.
Considering the patient’s age and the risks associated with multiple surgeries, the medical team decided to combine all three procedures into a single operative session after detailed multidisciplinary discussions and obtaining informed consent.
Advanced Robotic Surgery Ensures Faster Recovery
The surgical sequence began with a robot-assisted minimally invasive coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) performed by Dr. Sudarshan G T, lasting approximately 2.5 hours.
This was immediately followed by a robot-assisted groin hernia repair performed by Dr. Saurabh Mishra, which took around one hour.
The final procedure, circumcision with frenuloplasty, was performed by Dr. Mahendra Jain in approximately 30 minutes to permanently treat the patient’s phimosis.
All three surgeries were completed successfully under a single anaesthesia without complications. Notably, the patient required no blood transfusion, spent only 12 hours in the ICU, was discharged after three days, and resumed normal daily activities within two weeks.
Doctors Highlight Benefits of Multidisciplinary Robotic Care
Dr. Sudarshan G T, Director – MICS & Robotic Cardiac Surgery, said: “Performing three complex surgeries under single anaesthesia allowed us to avoid repeated procedures while reducing the overall physiological stress on the patient. This first reported case demonstrates how advanced robotic technology and multidisciplinary expertise can safely expand the boundaries of minimally invasive cardiac surgery.”
Dr. Saurabh Mishra, Director – GI, Minimal Access & Bariatric Surgery, added: “Instead of subjecting an elderly patient to three separate surgeries and multiple recoveries, we addressed all surgical conditions in one operative session. Robotic surgery offers enhanced precision, smaller incisions, reduced blood loss, less postoperative pain, faster recovery, and shorter hospital stays.”
Dr. Mahendra Jain, Consultant – Urology, said: “Combining the urological procedure with two major surgeries under the same anaesthesia eliminated the need for another hospital admission while improving the patient’s quality of life through comprehensive, patient-centric care.”
Mr. Gautham CB, Facility Director, Fortis Hospital Bannerghatta Road, described the procedure as a reflection of the hospital’s commitment to innovation, multidisciplinary collaboration, and delivering world-class patient outcomes through advanced robotic surgical technology.
The landmark procedure demonstrates how integrated robotic surgery and multidisciplinary planning can redefine complex surgical care, particularly for elderly patients with multiple co-existing medical conditions.
