Mumbai : Visa (NYSE: V), a global leader in digital payments, has announced the launch of Visa Payment Passkey (VPP) in India, introducing a next-generation authentication solution designed to make online card payments faster, safer, and more convenient. The solution has gone live with IDFC FIRST Bank, making it the first banking partner in India to offer Visa Payment Passkey to its cardholders.

The launch represents a significant advancement in India’s digital payments ecosystem by reducing dependence on traditional One-Time Passwords (OTPs) and enabling seamless authentication using a device’s built-in security features such as fingerprint, facial recognition, PIN, password, or pattern.

Visa Payment Passkey is currently available for select users across leading digital platforms including Myntra, Paytm, MakeMyTrip, Tata Starbucks, Reliance Digital, and EatSure (Rebel Foods). The rollout is supported by an extensive network of payment technology partners, including Juspay, Wibmo, Razorpay, PayU, Pine Labs, BillDesk, M2P Fintech, and Paytm Payments Services, enabling smooth integration for merchants and payment platforms.

Built on globally accepted FIDO authentication standards, Visa Payment Passkey complies with the Reserve Bank of India’s September 2025 Framework on Alternative Authentication Mechanisms for Digital Payment Transactions, encouraging the adoption of secure authentication methods beyond OTPs.

The solution allows consumers to complete a one-time registration after which they can authenticate eligible online transactions using their preferred device authentication method. This delivers a consistent, frictionless checkout experience while strengthening payment security across participating merchants.

“Trust is the foundation of India’s digital payments journey—one that continues to set a powerful example for the world through its scale, innovation, and the confidence of millions of consumers and businesses,” said Suresh Sethi, Group Country Manager, India & South Asia, Visa.

“With Visa Payment Passkey, we are helping make digital commerce safer, more inclusive and easier to use by enabling people to authenticate card payments through familiar device-based experiences such as biometrics, PINs, passwords or patterns. Combined with tokenization, this solution adds an important layer of protection, reduces friction and strengthens trust at every checkout. It also lays the foundation for the next era of agentic commerce, where trusted credentials and strong authentication will enable intelligent digital experiences to act safely on behalf of consumers. This supports India’s ambition to build a more accessible, resilient and future-ready digital economy.”

Visa expects the implementation of Payment Passkey to significantly improve payment success rates (PSR) while reducing the number of authentication steps required during online transactions compared to conventional OTP-based verification. The authentication solution is compatible with major operating systems and browsers and is supported by billions of FIDO-enabled devices globally, making it scalable for widespread adoption across India’s rapidly growing digital commerce ecosystem.

As India continues to strengthen its digital infrastructure, Visa remains committed to collaborating with financial institutions, fintech companies, and merchants to introduce innovative payment technologies that enhance security, improve customer experience, and drive financial inclusion.
