Gandhinagar : The Indian Institute of Teacher Education (IITE), Gandhinagar, has announced a landmark academic transformation with the establishment of seven new university schools under the framework of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The strategic expansion marks a historic step in redefining teacher education in India through multidisciplinary learning, research integration, and future-ready academic frameworks.
Established in 2010, IITE has steadily emerged as one of Gujarat’s premier teacher education institutions. With the launch of these seven new schools, the university is moving towards becoming a multidisciplinary institution aligned with the vision of a “University of National Importance.”
The expansion aims to promote holistic education, interdisciplinary research, skill-oriented learning, and innovation-driven academic practices while responding to the rapidly evolving global education ecosystem.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Mehul Dave, Director, Indian Institute of Teacher Education (IITE), said that the university is poised to become India’s first institution dedicated to training and developing AI educators. He further stated that the Gujarat Government has sanctioned a grant of Rs. 127 crore for the development of advanced academic infrastructure and hostel facilities to support the university’s long-term growth vision.
Dr. Dave added that the scope of teacher education is now expanding beyond conventional classroom teaching to include educators and mentors from sectors such as computer education, sports coaching, theatre and performing arts, higher education, science, languages, social sciences, physical education, and educational leadership.

The newly operational schools include:
- School of Education in Sciences and Mathematics
- School of Education in Humanities and Social Sciences
- School of Physical Education, Sports and Yoga
- School of Education in Performing Arts and Fine Arts
- School of Education in Commerce, Management and Educational Leadership

NEP-2020 to Enable Flexible and Multidisciplinary Learning
Under the new academic framework, IITE will integrate subjects such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), sports, arts, commerce, management, and educational leadership with mainstream teacher education.
The multidisciplinary approach will provide students with greater flexibility in choosing subjects across disciplines. Science students, for example, will now be able to opt for subjects like AI, Philosophy, and humanities-based electives according to their interests and career aspirations.
The institution believes this model will strengthen interdisciplinary research and encourage innovative teaching-learning practices beyond traditional academic structures.
New Opportunities for Research and Doctoral Programmes
The academic expansion is also expected to open significant opportunities for PhD programmes and advanced research in emerging multidisciplinary domains including science and technology, human sciences, arts education, sports education, educational leadership, and AI-integrated pedagogy.
With this transformative initiative, IITE aims to nurture future educators equipped with technological expertise, research capabilities, academic leadership skills, and multidisciplinary perspectives to meet the changing demands of modern education systems.
