Rosatom Chief Alexey Likhachev Meets Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to Discuss Nuclear Energy Cooperation

Mumbai : Director General of Rosatom, Alexey Likhachev, held a working meeting with Prabowo Subianto during his official visit to the Indonesia on May 12, 2026. The discussions focused on expanding Russian-Indonesian cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, including the development of nuclear power projects, strengthening nuclear infrastructure, personnel training, and the implementation of non-energy nuclear technologies.

Speaking on the occasion, Alexey Likhachev said the ongoing dialogue between Russia and Indonesia in the nuclear sector is progressing in an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect. “Indonesia has set ambitious goals for the development of nuclear energy. We are discussing not only technologies, but also the creation of a long-term partnership focused on developing a new industry for the country, training national personnel, building new competencies, and strengthening technological sovereignty,” he stated.

Rosatom also expressed readiness to support Indonesia’s national nuclear programme through a comprehensive approach that includes both large-scale nuclear power solutions and advanced small modular reactor (SMR) technologies, including floating nuclear power units. The meeting also highlighted the importance of integrating nuclear energy into Indonesia’s power system while taking into account the geographical characteristics of the archipelagic nation.

As part of the visit, the Rosatom delegation is also scheduled to meet senior Indonesian officials, including representatives from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), state electricity company PT PLN, and the Regional Representative Council of Indonesia.

Russia and Indonesia share a longstanding partnership in the nuclear sector. The year 2026 marks the 20th anniversary of the intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the peaceful uses of atomic energy, signed on December 1, 2006. Rosatom’s Engineering Division brings together leading enterprises of Russia’s nuclear industry, including Atomstroyexport JSC and Atomenergoproekt JSC. The division is recognised globally for its extensive nuclear power plant construction portfolio and international EPC capabilities.
