Ahmedabad : Digital transformation leader Mallika Bajaj engaged students at GLS University in an insightful conversation on artificial intelligence, algorithms, privacy, digital sovereignty and the evolving relationship between technology and society as part of “Decoded with Chandni Kapadia.” The session was hosted by Ms. Chandni Kapadia, Executive Director, GLS University.
Drawing from her journey as a former competitive tennis player who represented India, followed by a career spanning media, entrepreneurship, digital transformation and global communications, Mallika spoke about adapting to change and staying prepared in an increasingly technology-driven world.
A key focus of the discussion was digital privacy. Mallika highlighted how individuals routinely share personal information through photographs, biometrics, applications and online activity without fully understanding its value. She observed, “Privacy is part of the price we pay for free software,” while emphasising the need for greater digital awareness and individual responsibility.
The conversation also examined algorithms and virality, with Mallika encouraging audiences to pause and question why certain digital content triggers strong emotional reactions or sustained engagement.
On digital sovereignty, she stressed the importance of India building greater ownership across digital ecosystems, including data, infrastructure, cybersecurity and citizens’ digital rights. She noted that digital governance must extend beyond simply creating applications and technology platforms.
The discussion was particularly relevant for students as it explored AI in education, including the growing use of AI for assignments, emails and coding. Mallika highlighted the need for learning ecosystems that protect student research, innovation and data while ensuring technology remains human-centred.
The interaction also touched upon digital content and young audiences, with Mallika raising questions around who controls the platforms through which people consume information and stories. She emphasised the importance of developing and owning ecosystems that enable India to communicate its own stories and knowledge.
During the rapid-fire segment, Mallika chose “Gut” over algorithm, described Instagram as “weaponized”, and highlighted emotional intelligence, digital media literacy, critical thinking and storytelling as important skills. She gave storytelling a 10/10 rating.
The conversation concluded with the Decoded Signature Segment, where Mallika reflected on success, algorithms and virality. She described success in terms of making a meaningful difference and spoke about trusting her instincts and finding her own pace. A recurring philosophy throughout the interaction was “Creating Kinder Content,” reflecting Mallika’s approach to digital communication and content.
Through “Decoded with Chandni Kapadia,” GLS University continues to facilitate conversations that connect students with accomplished professionals and ideas shaping the world beyond the classroom. The session with Mallika Bajaj encouraged students to look beyond the technology itself and develop a more conscious understanding of how algorithms, AI and digital platforms influence everyday choices.
