Ahmedabad : Every great scientific achievement begins with a question — a curiosity to understand what lies beyond the known. Bringing this spirit of inquiry to students and audiences, GLS University hosted a special edition of “Decoded with Chandni Kapadia”, featuring renowned space scientist Prof. Anil Bhardwaj, Director, Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Ahmedabad.

The engaging conversation between Prof. Bhardwaj and Ms. Chandni Kapadia, Executive Director, GLS University, offered audiences a rare insight into the experiences, challenges and reflections that have shaped his decades-long journey in space science and planetary exploration.

Moving beyond missions and milestones, the session explored the role of curiosity, perseverance, scientific temperament and purpose in advancing knowledge. Prof. Bhardwaj reflected on his early fascination with physics and space science and how that curiosity evolved into a career dedicated to understanding planets, space environments and the larger mysteries of the universe.

The conversation touched upon his association with India’s space ecosystem and experiences involving ISRO, NASA, Chandrayaan, Mangalyaan and planetary science research. Reflecting on some of the defining moments of his career, Prof. Bhardwaj highlighted how challenges, opportunities and breakthroughs collectively contribute to building scientific capabilities and advancing exploration.

A key theme of the discussion was India’s distinctive approach to space exploration. Speaking about landmark missions such as Mangalyaan, Prof. Bhardwaj emphasised that scientific achievement is not determined by resources alone, but by innovation, imagination, teamwork, determination and the ability to solve complex problems efficiently.

The discussion also explored India’s next scientific frontiers. Prof. Bhardwaj stressed the importance of creating an environment where young researchers are encouraged to pursue challenging questions, experiment with new ideas and contribute to the next generation of scientific discoveries.

Addressing the relationship between success and risk in scientific research, Prof. Bhardwaj noted that uncertainty is an inherent part of exploration. As India’s space missions increasingly attract global attention, he emphasised the importance of giving scientists the freedom to experiment, learn from setbacks and continue pushing the boundaries of knowledge.

A particularly reflective segment focused on humanity’s aspirations to explore the Moon, Mars and other planetary bodies. Prof. Bhardwaj highlighted that while humanity looks towards other worlds, it must also recognise its responsibility towards Earth. The conversation underlined that space exploration and environmental stewardship are interconnected responsibilities rather than competing priorities.

The session also revisited the period following Chandrayaan-2, highlighting the significance of leadership, institutional support and encouragement during moments of uncertainty. The discussion underscored how supportive leadership can strengthen scientific teams and enable researchers to retain the confidence to pursue ambitious goals despite setbacks.

Reflecting on more than three decades of India’s scientific transformation, Prof. Bhardwaj spoke about the country’s expanding research ecosystem and the growing interest among young Indians in science and technology. He also emphasised the continued need to strengthen research, innovation and scientific thinking.

An insightful part of the conversation examined scientific temperament, traditional beliefs and evidence-based thinking, including discussions around astrology. Prof. Bhardwaj emphasised the importance of questioning, observation and scientific methodology while recognising the distinction between belief and evidence.

Interacting with students, Prof. Bhardwaj encouraged them to remain curious, continue learning and develop the confidence to explore ideas beyond conventional boundaries. He reminded the young audience that significant discoveries often begin with the courage to ask questions. “Science is driven by curiosity. The questions we ask today become the discoveries of tomorrow. Exploration is not only about reaching new worlds; it is also about expanding our understanding of ourselves and the universe around us.” — Prof. Anil Bhardwaj, Director, Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Ahmedabad

The programme concluded with an engaging interaction between Prof. Bhardwaj and students, with discussions extending to leadership, innovation, scientific thinking and the future of space exploration. Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Chandni Kapadia, Executive Director, GLS University, highlighted the importance of creating platforms that connect students with inspiring individuals who have made significant contributions in their respective fields. She emphasised that such conversations enable students to develop curiosity, think differently and gain perspectives that extend beyond conventional academic learning.

Through “Decoded with Chandni Kapadia,” GLS University continues to foster meaningful conversations with thought leaders, innovators and changemakers, providing students with opportunities to explore new perspectives, challenge assumptions and build a purpose-driven future.
