Gandhinagar : Gujarat has achieved a major milestone in its green energy journey by reducing 49.79 million tonnes of carbon emissions during the financial year 2025-26, the highest annual reduction recorded by the state so far. The achievement aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of building a clean and sustainable India while advancing the country’s Net Zero by 2070 mission.
The reduction was driven by Gujarat’s rapid expansion of renewable energy, which enabled the state to generate a record 67,655 million units of electricity from green energy sources during FY26.
179 Million Tonnes of Carbon Emissions Prevented in Five Years
Over the last five years, Gujarat has prevented 179 million tonnes of carbon emissions from entering the atmosphere through sustained investments in renewable energy and supportive policy initiatives.
The state generates nearly 442 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions annually, making the cumulative reduction equivalent to almost 40% of its yearly emissions over the five-year period. Experts attribute this achievement to increased adoption of solar, wind and other renewable energy sources, which significantly reduce dependence on fossil fuels and help combat climate change.
Green Energy Policies Driving the Transition
The state’s progress has been supported by several key policy initiatives, including:
- Integrated Renewable Energy (RE) Policy 2026
- Green Hydrogen Policy
- Gujarat Pumped Storage Policy
These policies, implemented through agencies such as GUVNL (Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited), GEDA (Gujarat Energy Development Agency) and GPCL (Gujarat Power Corporation Limited) under the Energy Department, have accelerated renewable energy deployment and improved the share of green power in Gujarat’s energy mix.
Towards 100 GW Renewable Energy Capacity
The Gujarat government has set an ambitious target of achieving 100 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, positioning the state as one of India’s leading renewable energy hubs. Officials said the roadmap supports India’s commitments under the Paris Agreement while contributing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of achieving Net Zero emissions by 2070.

According to environmental experts, reducing carbon emissions has far-reaching benefits beyond environmental conservation. Increased use of clean energy helps improve air quality, reduces health risks associated with pollution, strengthens energy security and supports sustainable economic growth.
