Ahmedabad: Germany is rapidly emerging as one of the most preferred study-abroad destinations for Indian students, driven by tuition-free education, English-taught programmes, affordable living costs, and strong post-study employment opportunities, according to Auxilo Finserve.

While the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia continue to attract a significant share of Indian students, evolving visa regulations and rising education costs are encouraging students to explore emerging destinations such as Germany, Ireland, France, and the Netherlands.

According to Shweta Guru, Chief Business Officer – GlobalEd, Auxilo Finserve, the number of Indian students in Germany has more than doubled over the past five years—from 28,905 in 2020 to 59,419 during the 2024–25 academic year. India has now overtaken China to become Germany’s largest international student community.

“The Institute for Employment Research projects that Germany will require nearly seven million skilled workers by 2035, creating significant opportunities for international graduates,” said Ms. Guru.

Affordability continues to be the biggest deciding factor for Indian students pursuing overseas education. A 2025 Leap Scholar survey, based on over three million student interactions, found that 75% of students prioritised affordability, followed by scholarships (70%) and career prospects (58%), while university rankings did not feature among the top five deciding factors.

One of Germany’s biggest advantages is its public university system, where international students can pursue higher education without paying tuition fees. Students are generally required to pay only a semester contribution ranging between ₹16,000 and ₹38,000 (€150–€350), which often includes access to public transportation.

Language has also become less of a barrier, with nearly 2,400 degree programmes now offered entirely in English, particularly at the postgraduate level.

Students are required to maintain a blocked account before arriving in Germany to demonstrate financial capability. For 2026, this requirement stands at approximately ₹12.9 lakh (€11,904), which is released in equal monthly instalments after arrival to cover living expenses.

According to Auxilo, the estimated total cost of pursuing a two-year master’s degree in Germany, including living expenses, ranges from ₹22 lakh to ₹28 lakh, significantly lower than similar programmes in the UK or the US, where costs can range between ₹45 lakh and ₹70 lakh or more.

Career prospects further strengthen Germany’s appeal. Fresh graduates in engineering and IT can expect starting salaries ranging between ₹49 lakh and ₹70 lakh annually (€45,000–€65,000). Professionals earning above approximately ₹49 lakh (€45,300) annually may also qualify for the EU Blue Card, offering an accelerated pathway to long-term employment and permanent residency.

“For Indian families, Germany has fundamentally changed the economics of studying abroad,” said Shweta Guru. “With tuition-free education and an 18-month post-study work opportunity in Europe’s largest economy, Germany offers students in engineering, IT, and data science a clear pathway from education to employment.”

Beyond affordability and career opportunities, Germany continues to attract students due to its safe environment, robust public infrastructure, compulsory healthcare coverage, and high quality of life, making it one of the fastest-growing destinations for Indian students seeking global education.
