New Delhi : The Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team (SKAT), the premier aerobatic display team of the Indian Air Force, continues to inspire millions with its spectacular aerial manoeuvres, precision flying and unmatched display of professionalism. Formed in 1996 and based at Air Force Station Bidar, the team was established to showcase the operational excellence, discipline and capabilities of the Indian Air Force through synchronised aerobatic performances.

The team initially flew the iconic Kiran Mk II aircraft, from which it derived its name “Surya Kiran,” meaning “Rays of the Sun.” Over the years, the team emerged as one of the most recognised and admired symbols of the Indian Air Force, captivating audiences across the country with breathtaking formations and dynamic displays.

In May 2006, the team was formally designated as 52 Squadron, “Sharks,” carrying forward the distinguished legacy of the erstwhile MiG-21 FL squadron. The transition marked a significant milestone in the evolution of the team and reinforced its operational heritage within the Indian Air Force.

A major transformation came in 2015 when SKAT inducted the advanced Hawk Mk-132 aircraft, licence-produced by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). The modern aircraft significantly enhanced the team’s display capabilities with improved avionics, superior performance and advanced smoke-generation systems, ushering in a new era of aerobatic excellence.

Over the years, the Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team has conducted hundreds of aerial displays across India and internationally, representing the Indian Air Force at prestigious air shows, national celebrations and global aviation events. The team has showcased its precision flying in countries including the UAE, Thailand, Laos, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and China, earning widespread admiration from aviation enthusiasts and spectators worldwide.

Among the notable milestones achieved by the team are its participation in major editions of Aero India, international performances across Asia and the Middle East, and the spectacular aerial display over Chennai that witnessed an estimated audience of nearly 1.7 million spectators along the coastline. In another historic achievement, the team conducted its first-ever aerial display over the Himalayas in 2026, demonstrating extraordinary flying skill in challenging terrain and weather conditions.

The squadron is presently commanded by Group Captain Ajay Dasarathi, an experienced Su-30 pilot and Qualified Flying Instructor with extensive operational flying experience. Under his leadership, the team continues to uphold the proud traditions and values of the Indian Air Force while inspiring the next generation through its remarkable aerial performances. The Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team remains a shining symbol of courage, teamwork, discipline and the technological prowess of the Indian Air Force, continuing to enthral audiences and strengthen India’s aviation legacy on the global stage.
