Ahmedabad : The message of “Move Free. Live Pain-Free” resonated across the Sabarmati Riverfront on Sunday morning as the Rheumatology Awareness Walkathon 2026 drew an enthusiastic gathering of nearly 150 patients, caregivers, rheumatologists, and supporters.

The walkathon was organised by the Rheumatology Association of Gujarat (RAG) in partnership with the Indian Rheumatology Association (IRA), with support from patient group Antardhwani. The initiative aimed to spread awareness about joint health, arthritis, and autoimmune diseases, while encouraging a supportive ecosystem for those affected.

Participants covered a spirited 3-kilometre stretch near Sardar Bridge, reinforcing the importance of mobility, early diagnosis, and proactive care.

Dr Reena Sharma, Consultant Rheumatologist and President of RAG, said, “By walking together, we have broken the silence surrounding arthritis and autoimmune conditions. Let this be a collective commitment towards timely diagnosis and lifelong mobility.”

RAG Vice-President Dr Vishnu Sharma and Secretary Dr Anuj Shukla were also present at the event.

Dr Vishnu Sharma noted, “Rheumatic diseases are manageable with early intervention and community support. Today’s walk symbolises hope for a healthier, pain-free future.”

Dr Anuj Shukla added, “Movement is medicine for joints. This initiative highlights how collective action can empower patients to lead fulfilling lives beyond chronic pain.”

Extending national support, IRA President Dr Aman Sharma flagged off a parallel walkathon in Chandigarh and emphasised the pan-India nature of the campaign. “This is a nationwide movement, with multiple cities participating simultaneously to raise awareness about rheumatology,” he said.

The event also witnessed emotional and inspiring moments, including a young arthritis patient sharing her return to dance post-treatment, while caregivers highlighted the impact of peer support networks facilitated by Antardhwani. The walkathon concluded with a commitment towards continued engagement through awareness webinars, early screening drives, and patient support initiatives.
