Consumers often make food choices based on brand, price, or taste, but experts highlight that the real indicators of quality lie in product labels. Dr. Manika Singh, Nutritional Consultant at Godrej Industries Group, emphasises the importance of understanding key food label abbreviations to make informed and healthier purchasing decisions.
According to Dr. Singh, simple terms like BBE (Best Before End) help consumers assess product freshness and quality, ensuring better taste and texture. Similarly, IQF (Individually Quick Frozen) indicates advanced freezing technology that preserves food’s natural flavour, texture, and safety. A recent STTEM 2.0 report by Godrej Yummiez reveals that 85% of Indians are unaware of IQF, despite its benefits.
She further explains that HPP (High-Pressure Processing) is a modern preservation method that retains nutrients and eliminates the need for chemical additives, while FD (Freeze-Dried) technology ensures longer shelf life without compromising taste or nutritional value.
Dr. Singh notes that being label-aware empowers consumers to choose better-quality food products and avoid misleading assumptions. She encourages shoppers to spend a few extra seconds reading labels, as these small details can significantly impact overall food quality, safety, and nutrition.
