Ahmedabad: The Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL), a public sector entity under the Ministry of Railways, has officially completed all work associated with its Ahmedabad Unit. This marks a significant achievement in India’s largest railway infrastructure project since gaining independence.

The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) spans an impressive 1,506 km, traversing the states of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. It is now managed and monitored from a cutting-edge Operational Control Centre (OCC) located in Sabarmati, Ahmedabad. This facility acts as the operational hub for the entire western route.

Boasting a 72-meter curved video wall, one of the largest in Asia, the Centre facilitates real-time monitoring of all freight trains, overhead power systems, and track conditions throughout the network. Integrated safety measures, including automated alarms for detecting hot axles, enable prompt responses, ensuring the safety of freight operations. Additionally, the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor is the first in India to function without any manned level crossings along its entire length.

Manish Awasthy, Chief General Manager of DFCCIL in Ahmedabad, stated, “The Operations Command Centre in Ahmedabad serves as the heartbeat of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor. From this hub, we oversee the movement of longer, faster trains traveling at speeds of up to 100 km/h, manage double-stack container operations, and guarantee optimal efficiency in linking India’s busiest ports with its industrial centers.”

The latest achievement in the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor is the operationalization of the New Sanand connectivity. This engineering marvel serves as a crucial link featuring India’s first large-scale rail-over-rail flyovers, facilitating seamless freight transportation across the nation.

With the inclusion of the Palanpur–New Makarpura section, DFCCIL now provides direct connections to major ports such as Mundra, Kandla, Tuna, Navlakhi, and Pipavav. This enhancement significantly reduces transit times from 24–36 hours to less than a day.

This enhanced connectivity is anticipated to alleviate congestion on current Indian Railways passenger and freight routes. It will facilitate 1.5 to 2 trips for port-bound trains within the same timeframe as a single trip previously, bolster industries in Palanpur, Mehsana, Sanand, Vadodara, Jamnagar, and surrounding areas, while also reducing logistics costs and enhancing supply chain reliability. Additionally, the corridor promotes high-speed cargo services for MSMEs, e-commerce platforms, and time-sensitive industries. The New Rewari to New Sanand route offers transit times of under 11 hours, minimizing road dependency and boosting last-mile efficiency.

“This dedicated, time-bound freight corridor represents a significant advancement in decongesting traditional routes and fostering multimodal logistics growth,” Mr. Awasthy remarked.

The Dedicated Freight Corridor Project, which includes the 1,337 km Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) and the 1,506 km WDFC, has been designated as an Iconic Project by the Government of India. As of now, 96.4% of the total 2,741 route kilometers have been commissioned.
