Tapukara: Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt. Ltd. (HMSI) has announced a significant expansion of its two-wheeler manufacturing capacity with the addition of a third production line at its Tapukara plant in Rajasthan’s Alwar district, reinforcing its long-term commitment to India’s rapidly evolving mobility landscape.

The new production line is scheduled to commence operations in 2028 with an annual capacity of 6.7 lakh units. Upon completion, the total production capacity of HMSI’s second factory will increase to 2.01 million units per year. The expansion is also expected to generate over 2,000 employment opportunities, contributing to regional economic development.

Commenting on the development, Tsutsumu Otani, President & CEO, HMSI, said India is entering a transformative phase in mobility, and Honda is focused on strengthening its production ecosystem to enhance resilience, flexibility, and future readiness. He added that the expansion aligns with the company’s commitment to delivering value-driven, sustainable, and accessible mobility solutions.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma welcomed the move, stating that the investment further strengthens the state’s position as a preferred manufacturing hub. He noted that HMSI’s continued expansion will boost industrial growth, generate employment, and support the broader automotive ecosystem in the region.

HMSI currently operates four manufacturing plants across India with a combined annual production capacity of 6.25 million units. Since commencing operations in 2001, the company has produced over 70 million two-wheelers in the country. In line with its expansion strategy, HMSI is also setting up a fourth production line at its Vithalapur facility in Gujarat, which is expected to be operational by 2027.

The Tapukara facility, which began operations in 2011 with an initial capacity of 0.6 million units, has undergone multiple expansions and efficiency upgrades over the years. Its current capacity stands at 1.3 million units, with further optimisation expected to increase output to 1.34 million units by FY2026.

HMSI will invest approximately ₹1,500 crore to develop the third production line, which will be designed for flexible manufacturing of commuter motorcycles and scooters. The company has also acquired 73,700 square metres of additional land at Tapukara to support future expansion plans.  With these developments, HMSI aims to scale its total production capacity in India from 6.25 million units to nearly 8 million units annually by FY2028. Aligned with Honda’s global goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, HMSI continues to integrate sustainable practices across its operations, including renewable energy adoption, water conservation, and recycling initiatives.
