Ahmedabad-based Kalgi Rawal, who has been 100% visually impaired since birth, has emerged as a powerful symbol of resilience and determination. Kalgi began her educational journey at the age of five in a regular English-medium school, studying alongside sighted students. At a time when inclusive education was still rare, she became one of the first visually impaired girls in Gujarat to attend a mainstream school. Competing with her classmates, she consistently secured top ranks from Grade 1 to Grade 5 and stood first in her class.
Her confidence soon led her to the world of media. At just 13, Kalgi became a Little Radio Jockey, later receiving training in anchoring and public speaking. In 2012, she achieved a milestone when she anchored a major event in New Jersey, USA, alongside renowned voice artist Harish Bhimani, performing before an audience of nearly 10,000 people and earning a standing ovation.
Committed to her academic goals, Kalgi cleared her Class 10 examination in English medium with 76% marks after just two months of preparation, and later completed her Class 12 through NIOS. Driven by a mission to support people with disabilities, she founded the Kalgi Foundation and in 2017 was appointed Gujarat’s Social Ambassador for the Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan, a national campaign promoting accessibility and inclusion.
Today, Kalgi Rawal stands as an inspiring reminder that true vision is not defined by eyesight, but by courage, determination, and belief in oneself.
