Chennai, March 2026: The spirit of sustainability and fitness came alive in Chennai as the SBI Green Marathon Season 6 arrived in Tamil Nadu’s capital after energising cities such as Lucknow, Chandigarh, Bhopal, Visakhapatnam, Bengaluru, Guwahati, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, and Thiruvananthapuram.

As the sun rose over the Bay of Bengal, G Square Tranquil in Uthandi along the iconic East Coast Road (ECR) transformed into a vibrant hub of health, community participation, and environmental consciousness.

Set against the scenic coastal stretch of ECR — known for its refreshing sea breeze, wide roads, and picturesque sunrise — the Chennai edition beautifully reflected the marathon’s guiding philosophy: “Run for a Greener India.” With its thriving running culture and increasing environmental awareness, Chennai proved to be a natural host for this nationwide green initiative.

More than 4,000 enthusiastic participants — including seasoned runners, students, families, corporate teams, fitness communities, and defence personnel — gathered to take part in the marathon. For many, the event was not just about endurance or competition, but about contributing to a larger movement promoting sustainability and healthier lifestyles.

The marathon was ceremoniously flagged off by senior dignitaries from the State Bank of India, including Shri Vivekanand Choubey, Chief General Manager; Shri M. V. R. Murali Krishna, General Manager Network 1; Shri Joby Jose, General Manager Network 2; Smt. S. Haritha Poornima, General Manager Network 3; Shri Srinivasa Rao Vallamchitti, General Manager CAG Chennai; and Shri Srinivasa Rao Jonnalagaddda, General Manager CCGRO Chennai.

Their presence reaffirmed the bank’s strong commitment to sustainability, inclusive development, and community-driven initiatives that encourage responsible living. Staying true to its eco-conscious philosophy, the SBI Green Marathon delivered a thoughtfully curated and environmentally responsible race experience. Participants received organic cotton T-shirts, plantable BIBs, and reusable cloth goodie bags, reducing dependence on single-use materials. Runners were also provided black alkaline water to support hydration, endurance, and recovery.

The event also implemented dedicated waste management systems, ensuring proper waste segregation and responsible disposal — reinforcing the marathon’s green mission. Adding excitement and energy to the morning were Radio Mirchi’s RJ Maddy and RJ Jithin, whose lively interactions, humour, and motivational hosting kept both runners and spectators engaged throughout the event.

Participants competed across 5K, 10K, and Half Marathon categories, featuring AIMS-certified routes that ensured international standards of course accuracy and safety. The smooth coastal stretch of ECR, complemented by scenic sea views and cool winds, made the run both challenging and memorable for athletes and recreational runners alike.

With every kilometre covered along Chennai’s coastline, the city reaffirmed its commitment to environmental awareness, collective responsibility, and holistic well-being. From the early morning flag-off to the eco-conscious post-run celebrations, Chennai proudly added another milestone to the marathon’s growing 17-city nationwide journey.

As SBI Green Marathon Season 6 continues its mission across India, Chennai stands as a powerful reminder that when communities come together with purpose, every step can bring the nation closer to a healthier, greener future.
