Gandhinagar : Entrepreneurship is increasingly emerging as a powerful driver of India’s economic and social transformation. With supportive government policies, improved access to technology, and growing investor interest, the country has witnessed a significant rise in startups and innovation-led enterprises. Beyond creating new businesses, entrepreneurship is also playing a crucial role in generating employment, strengthening local economies, and contributing to India’s GDP growth.
However, successful entrepreneurship requires more than just innovative ideas. Strong entrepreneurial skills, market awareness, sustainable financial management, and well-defined business models are essential to transform ideas into scalable enterprises. Structured entrepreneurship education therefore plays a critical role by combining academic learning with practical exposure, mentorship, and real-world business experience.
Institutions dedicated to entrepreneurship education are becoming key pillars of India’s startup ecosystem. Among them, the Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII), Ahmedabad, has been playing a pioneering role for more than four decades. Recognised as a Centre of Excellence in the skilling ecosystem by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Government of India, EDII focuses on nurturing entrepreneurs who can build sustainable businesses and create wider economic impact.
Unlike conventional management programmes that largely focus on producing corporate managers, EDII’s academic approach is designed to develop entrepreneurs, family business successors, intrapreneurs, and community leaders. Its flagship programmes include the Post Graduate Diploma in Management – Entrepreneurship (PGDM-E) and the Post Graduate Diploma in Management – Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Venture Development (PGDM-IEV), both AICTE-approved programmes that guide students through the complete enterprise creation process—from idea generation to market validation.
A defining feature of EDII’s pedagogy is its emphasis on experiential learning. Students engage in live enterprise projects, rural and urban immersion programmes, and milestone-based venture development exercises that expose them to real market conditions.
The institute also hosts its own technology business incubator, the Centre for Advancing and Launching Enterprises (CrAdLE), established in 2016 with support from the Department of Science and Technology. The incubator provides mentoring, intellectual property support, networking opportunities, and access to funding sources for emerging startups. So far, 145 startups have been incubated, raising over ₹100 crore from investors alongside support from government schemes.
As India’s entrepreneurial landscape evolves, technology-driven innovation and deep-tech ventures are gaining momentum. By integrating enterprise creation, incubation support, and industry exposure within its programmes, EDII continues to prepare the next generation of entrepreneurs who will contribute to India’s innovation-driven growth story.
