Ahmedabad : Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Dr. Virendra Kumar on Wednesday inaugurated Shilp Samagam–2026 at Vallabh Sadan, describing the event as “a celebration of self-reliance, dignity and social empowerment.”
Extending advance Holi greetings, the Minister said the mela reflects the Centre’s continued efforts to economically empower marginalized sections and connect them to mainstream opportunities through direct market access. He informed that since 2014, nearly 100 Shilp Samagam melas have been organized or supported by the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment. During 2025–26, five such melas have already been held, with more planned in the next financial year.
Highlighting Ahmedabad’s historical significance — linked with Mahatma Gandhi, Sabarmati Ashram and the legacy of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel — Dr. Kumar said the city was an appropriate venue for such an inclusive initiative.
75 Stalls from 14 States
The mela, being held from February 26 to March 4, features 75 stalls showcasing handicrafts from 14 states. Products on display include Lucknowi Chikankari, Banarasi sarees, Chanderi and Maheshwari textiles, Bhagalpuri Tussar silk, Jaipuri and Kolhapuri footwear, agate stone crafts, bamboo products, Kota Doria fabrics and carpets.
The Minister said fairs like Shilp Samagam provide a crucial marketing platform to artisans belonging to Scheduled Castes, Other Backward Classes, Safai Karamcharis, Divyangjans, De-notified, Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes, senior citizens and members of the transgender community.
Focus on Digital & Financial Inclusion
For artisans unable to participate physically, the Ministry has developed the ‘Bharat Tulip’ online platform, integrated with major e-commerce platforms. A dedicated Bharat Tulip showroom has also been set up at the venue.

Dr. Kumar further highlighted key initiatives including the PM-SURAJ Portal, dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 13, 2024, which enables transparent delivery of concessional loans. The PM-DAKSH Portal supports skill training, while the SFMP Portal facilitates scholarships.
Under the SEED Scheme, 5,581 women self-help groups have been formed across eight states for De-notified, Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes, along with distribution of nearly 75,000 Ayushman Cards. The VISVAS Yojana offers 5 per cent interest subvention on bank loans, and the NAMASTE scheme ensures safety and dignity for sanitation workers.
The Minister expressed confidence that Shilp Samagam–2026 will significantly boost artisans’ sales while strengthening their journey towards economic independence and social dignity.
