Kolkata : Marking a significant milestone in West Bengal’s healthcare landscape, Charnock Hospital today inaugurated Charnock Lohia Hospital, the state’s first private heritage super speciality hospital, located in the heart of Central Kolkata.

Developed within a nearly 200-year-old Grade I heritage structure — formerly known as Lohia Matri Sewa Sadan — the 250-bed facility represents a rare convergence of architectural conservation and advanced medical infrastructure. The restoration breathes new life into the historic property while equipping it with cutting-edge tertiary and critical care capabilities.

The hospital was inaugurated by Firhad Hakim, Mayor of Kolkata, in the presence of senior state ministers, Members of Parliament, MLAs, civic officials, and healthcare leaders, underscoring the project’s significance for the state’s urban healthcare ecosystem.

₹250 Crore Investment in Adaptive Heritage Reuse

Spread across nearly four bighas of land, the project entails an investment exceeding ₹250 crore. It stands out as a model example of adaptive reuse of a heritage property for public healthcare infrastructure. The initiative is also expected to generate employment for approximately 1,000 individuals, contributing to Kolkata’s local economy.

Strategically located within 500 metres of Girish Park Metro Station, the hospital ensures seamless connectivity to Burrabazar, Jorasanko, Nimtala Ghat Street and Vivekananda Road — areas that have historically lacked access to a modern private super speciality hospital within a five-kilometre radius.

Advanced Tertiary & Critical Care Infrastructure

The 250-bed super speciality facility includes:

  • 90+ ward beds

  • 20 private cabins

  • 70 ICU beds across multiple critical care disciplines

  • 4–6 modular operation theatres

  • Dedicated Cath Lab

  • CTVS and Neuro OT facilities

  • 10-bed Emergency Department

  • 10-bed Dialysis Unit

  • Advanced diagnostic and imaging systems

The hospital is designed to deliver integrated, technology-enabled healthcare under one roof, strengthening tertiary care access for Central Kolkata’s dense residential and commercial population.

Leadership Perspective

Speaking on the occasion, Prashant Sharma, MD of Charnock Hospital, stated: “Across Bengal, several historic properties with immense potential remain underutilised. Through Charnock Lohia Hospital, we have demonstrated that heritage conservation and modern healthcare can coexist seamlessly. Central Kolkata has long required access to advanced private super speciality care within close proximity. With this launch, we are bridging that gap and bringing life-saving, world-class healthcare closer to where people live and work — true to our philosophy of ‘Patient First’.”
