Ahmedabad : Filmmaker Anubhav Sinha, widely recognised for delivering socially relevant cinema, interacted with media representatives in Ahmedabad ahead of the release of his upcoming film Assi, starring Taapsee Pannu. The director shared insights into his creative approach, storytelling philosophy, and evolving focus on issue-based cinema.
Sinha began his career in 1993 with the television show Shikast before entering mainstream Bollywood with Tum Bin. He later directed commercial entertainers such as Dus, Zeed, and Ra.One. Over the past decade, however, Sinha has repositioned his filmmaking toward socially conscious narratives, building a strong brand identity around meaningful storytelling.
Clarifying his creative process, Sinha stated that he does not intentionally pursue controversial or sensitive subjects. Instead, his stories emerge organically from real-world experiences, conversations, and observations. According to him, ideas that resonate deeply over time often evolve into full-length cinematic narratives.
The director has previously delivered critically acclaimed films including Mulk, Article 15, Thappad, and Bheed, all of which addressed pressing social themes while maintaining commercial relevance. With Assi, Sinha continues this trajectory, focusing on human emotions rooted in real societal contexts.
Speaking about the project, Sinha praised lead actor Taapsee Pannu for her professionalism, discipline, and commitment to performance. He described the production journey of Assi as creatively fulfilling and emotionally enriching. Industry observers view Assi as another strategic step in Sinha’s consistent positioning within the socially driven cinema space, blending meaningful content with audience engagement.
