New Delhi: India has initiated the forward-thinking National Mission on Edible Oils – Oil Palm (NMEO-OP) to achieve self-sufficiency in edible oils. The Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) model can serve as an exemplary guide in this endeavor. By establishing a certification system that includes clear standards for land use, ecology, and social welfare, India can enhance its resilience and position its palm oil as a premium product on the global stage. By deeply embedding sustainability within this sector, India has the potential to shift from being an importer to becoming self-sufficient and eventually an exporter, stated Ms. Belvinder Sron, Chief Executive Officer of the Malaysian Palm Oil Council.

India imports approximately 9 million tonnes of palm oil each year, investing nearly INR 40,000 crore, which accounts for around 56% of its total edible oil imports. This dependency must be reduced, not only for economic reasons but also for strategic purposes. The focus should shift toward establishing a self-sufficient and sustainable palm oil ecosystem. In this regard, Malaysia’s experience in the industry provides valuable insights.
